4.3.2 Social Legibility

People should be able to work together to make space legible. This includes democratising space and allowing people to work together to give their local space meaning and create identity. The space must suggest what it is to be used for.

4.3.2.1 Mixed Layers, Mixed Use

A space that is for congregation that can foster social community needs to have a mixture of levels, seating and openness for that to happen. Just leaving a space open may appear practically a good use of space, allowing the space to be adapted to need but it also leaves it too open, without any guide as to what the space is for (Fig. 4.16). It then lacks a focus and opportunities to create community.
